Drawing Machine and Hermitage
This machine attaches to the user’s hand as they use sign language, tracking each finger and adjusting a hot iron needle accordingly. The vertical, horizontal and rotational translations of each finger are traced and interpreted into a unique alphabet of characters defined by the sign of each individual letter.
When overlaid on top of one another, the full alphabet formed by the drawing machine displays a varying range of densities. This informs the leveling pattern of the topography as well as the placement of the spatial dividers in the structure. The shape of the walls and beams are inspired by the main structure of the drawing machine as it creates each individual letter. Pathways connect neighboring wall structures, thereby linking all layered platforms in an organized circulatory system. The density of the canopy defines a spectrum for public and private spaces to occupy.
