The investigation is deployed through a new housing typology that confronts the spatially segregated properties of the typical row house and instead presents a more ingrained composition rooted in a spectrum of human engagements. Urban farms operate as the vehicle to unite and frame the residences and their interaction; meandering both laterally and vertically to connect the existing city farm to its larger Bushwick community. The resulting exploration captures a diverse spatial hierarchy and encourages shared experiences along various scales of engagement. It is from these relationships that opportunities for spontaneous moments develop and allow for the true expression of the residents to be experienced with its architecture. their aging parents, and thus a strong family bond is present but intimacy is also desired. Each member is prescribed his/her own home or ‘tower’ within the house, though such an intimate space is still entwined with the semi-exterior domain that unites them all. The resulting ‘in-between’ is composed of thresholds, vertically and horizontally, that harbor the family’s varying levels of preferable concealment. Composed of generously spaced wooden slats, the platforms within the public domain are penetrated by movement, sound, light and shadow; creating a truly porous space despite its various levels. The thresholds of intimacy are also at play with the nature that surrounds, as it penetrates the concrete casing and meandering with the life within. population of day laborer though an influx of backpackers looking for cheap lodgings and engagement with the historic facades are slowly overtaking local housing as a result of gentrification. To address this dichotomy, a secondary layer of the city is proposed to be a light and antiinvasive cloud that allows travelers to inhabit and experience the neighborhood without directly displacing locals. The result, is a system which services public programs at its intersection to the city while providing private lodging that hides along the roofscape and behind local facades. A light mesh exterior offers an open experience while the programs withing jostle and meander along the shifting roofscapes, developing programmatically and formally depending on its context. Reintroducing the semi-private domain can generate a valuable spectrum from which individual and communal expression can begin to develop. Such a porous system is in a constant flux of openness, often creating small, intimate niches or vast, social zones. out spaces from an initial volume of concrete that stems from the naturally defined geometry of the site itself. The first spaces carved out are the main programmatic services, followed by a connecting circulation system, leaving only residual space for minor facilities. A tri-planed roof aligns with the programmatic needs of each zone. For example, the bathrooms should not require tall ceilings while the bedroom and library would make better use of a taller space; the roof adjusts accordingly. To differentiate program, the ceilings of the main spaces, secondary zones, and lightwells exhibit differing ceiling conditions and interactions. motions that together gently grafts light along the walls of the space and constructs an ambient environment. The first motion is peeling the ceiling up from the wall on the southern end, and introducing a platform to reflect light into the ceiling within. Next, the northern wall is bent and peeled outwards from the edge of the ceiling so that the gap formed above can subtly filter light down the sloped wall and onto the artwork. The last motion is inserting a chimney onto the eastern edge, which creates an immense vertical space from which light fully dilutes before reaching the main gallery space. The wood floors and clean plaster walls enhance the quality of the light and thus bring focus to the works placed within.
